We pray for Eliza Vallette (for quick healing), for Kirsten Stockman, Mel Caitlin and his family, Charlene Stewart, Louise Moore, Libby Greene, Ellen Grover, Lucinda Dudley, Tom Tukey, John Stewart, Denae Reath, Barbara Purtell, Herb Carman, Jon Vesey, Ruth Soper, Beverly Day, Ellie Batchelder, Dolly Guinther, Marsha H., Amiee Beal Church, Mary Beth, Wilda Higgins, Jack Walls, Marjorie Walls, Catherine, Gabriel, Guy, Benni, Deanna Francis, Billie Marshall, Roger, Dottie Abbott, Scott, Avis Keene, Sarah Cleaves, Pam Cleaves, Anne Cleaves, Penny Ayers, Pauline Hartin, Sherry Taylor, Jeanne, Deb Murray and the people of Church of Our Father.

Sunday, February 12 – Valentine Pot Luck Dinner at St. Saviour’s at 6pm in the Parish Hall. Sign up in the Parish Hall or see John Stewart. All donations will benefit St. Saviour’s MDI Fire Fund. Bring your family and friends with or without a dish, but COME!

Free Meals in our community:

·                                Tuesday, February 21 - 5-6:30 pm Bar Harbor Congregational Church, 29 Mt. Desert St., Bar Harbor

·                                Tuesday, March 13—5—6:30 pm. St. Saviour’s Parish. Traditional Irish boiled dinner of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, plus homemade desserts!

Weekly:

·                                Mondays from 3-6 pm—Everybody Eats - Parish Hall of St. Dunstan’s Church - 134 State St. , Ellsworth

·                                Thursdays from 12 Noon to 2pm - The Common Good Winter Community Meal - 106 Seawall Rd., Southwest Harbor

Now that winter is here (from time to time), and with weekday classes at issue for travel purposes for clergy and participants, St. Saviour’s will post any cancellations of a class on our Google calendar at www.stsaviours.me by 9 am that day. Rule of thumb - if MDI schools are closed, there will be no class that day, but check our website in any case as there may be additional travel hazards for the clergy facilitating the class as some live quite far off island.

Warming Center at St. Saviour’s. The Parish Hall will be open from 9 to 11am Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays as a Warming Center in the Bar Harbor Community. Volunteers are welcomed to host the times we are open. We provide coffee, tea and light snacks. Come bring your knitting, a pack of cards or a book and open your heart to those who need a warm place to be in this cold weather.

STEADFAST HOPE—a Lenten Study. Steadfast Hope tells a story in DVD and booklet form of Palestinians and Israelis striving for a just peace in the land we call Holy.  You are invited to join an open conversation sparked by these resources during the weeks of Lent. Please pick up a package from the office ($10 donation requested) and plan to come at 8:45 on  four Sunday mornings or at 6p.m. on four Thursday evenings during Lent. Each week we will gather in the Rectory Library to watch 15-20 minutes of the video and share a half hour of conversation about the issues, feelings, and opportunities raised by it. Please come, and invite your friends to join in this important dialog as a way to cultivate more peace and hope in our community and our world. This course, is open to the public as are all  offerings.  Facilitator: Deacon Jenny Reece.  Schedule: Thursdays at 6:p.m.:  February 23, March 1, March 22, March 29. Sundays at 8:45 a.m.: March 4, 11, 18, 25*. *Bishop Stephen Lane will be visiting the congregation on this Sunday, and will be invited to join us.

Bar Harbor Food Pantry Needs: The food pantry is still short on items like hearty canned soups, jelly, baking items and canned beans. February is one of  St. Saviour’s months for volunteering at the Food Pantry on Tuesdays and Thursdays. See the sign up in the Parish Hall or call our office at 288-4215 for hours and details.

Congregational Pastoral Care.  CPC teams are now being formed. Through prayer, study of the book "Christian Caregiving-- A Way of Life" , and practice of listening and caring skills, several members of St. Saviour's and St. John's are preparing themselves to be witnesses to the love of God to those among us who may be in need. If you would like to be part of this ministry please contact Deacon Jenny (812-2365)

Natural Causes Killed Victor. St. Saviour’s Episcopal Parish in Bar Harbor is receiving donations toward the production of a folk opera that will be premiered before the high altar on May 4 and 5, 2012. The opera is one way the parish meets human needs - in this case people who lack food and fuel and prisoners who lack humane treatment.  100% of the proceeds will go for food and fuel donations on Mt. Desert Island.  “Natural Causes Killed Victor” was written by George Swanson, a priest who worships at St. Saviour’s to encourage prison reform.  The opera relates the suffering and death of Maine prisoner Victor Valdez to the passion and death of Christ. Checks for tax exempt 501(c)(3) donations may be made out to “St. Saviour’s Parish,” memo line “Opera,” and mailed to St. Saviour’s Parish, 41 Mt. Desert St., Bar Harbor, Maine 04609. For more information contact George Swanson at 207 244 0579 and george@katrinasdream.org. From George Swanson: “I am very grateful that St. Saviour’s has taking the opera, Natural Causes Killed Victor, under its wing.  You are invited to consider trying out for one of the singing parts or working on the production crew.  The opera will premier before the high altar of St. Saviour’s on Friday May 4 and Saturday May 5.  Tryouts are Sunday, February 26 at 1 pm in St. Saviour’s Church.  Call or email me for scores, libretto and information.  415 464 7744  george@katrinasdream.org

Wish List: For Julia’s office, a sofa. For the “Bishop’s Room”, 2 small bedside tables. Contact the office, if you have any of the above to offer. We thank Charlotte Proctor for a comfy rocker!

"CLYNK" for St. Saviour's! Here's an easy way to contribute to St. Saviour's: 1.  Pick up a green "CLYNK" bag with a St. Saviour's sticker.  The bags are in the kitchen and the parish office during office hours. 2.  Take the bag home and fill it with your returnable bottles and cans. 3.  Return the bag to the "CLYNK" counter at Hannaford's. 4.  Repeat on a regular basis! All the money from your returnables will be credited to St. Saviour's when you pick up your "CLYNK" bags here. We could use some more CLYNK bags, so next time you are at Hannaford, please pick up a few for us – we will happily reimburse you!

Sign Up for Fresh Vegetables. Bar Harbor Community Farm is entering its third year of farming on Mount Desert Island.  You may have seen us out in our leased field last year at 444 Norway Drive near the Russell Farm Road.  Last year we grew for 20 families on Mount Desert Island.  This year we are inviting more to join us by becoming members in our CSA. A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a commitment between farmers and community members where both share the risks and the benefits of local food production. Member pledge their support by making a payment at the beginning of the season when the bulk of farm expenditures occur.   In exchange, each member receives a weekly share of the season’s harvest and the opportunity to be a part of sustainable food practices on MDI. As we did last year we will be charging $450 for 16 weeks of produce.  This comes out to $28.16 a week for a box of produce that will feed a family of four.  In addition to the monetary commitment, this year we are asking that each member make a work commitment of four hours to the farm during the course of the season.  This requirement serves a couple of purposes.  First, it truly helps the farm function and flourish. It will be a tremendous help to have CSA members contribute a few hours of work each season.  Second, it will serve to bring the community and the farm even closer together. These hours can be spread out, or performed at one time.  On the registration form there is a list of the kinds of tasks we will be looking for help with. We do recognize that contributing hours on the farm may not work for everyone.  To that end, we offer the option to buy out of your work hours, paying an extra $50 for your share. Weekly pick-ups will be available on Tuesdays at St. Saviour’s Church in Bar Harbor.  They will begin in mid to late June and will run into October.   CSA members will also be able to participate in seasonal potluck dinners, bulk buying opportunities, harvesting parties and community exchanges through our e-newsletter and Bar Harbor Community Farm blog. If you would like to join our farm community by becoming a member of our CSA, or if you have any questions, you can email us at barharborfarm@gmail.com or contact Glenon Friedmann at 479-2181.

In the Wider Community

Bangor Savings Bank - Your Vote Matters More! Mainers are caring people. Nearly 90,000 of you voted for your favorite charities last year in the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation's Community Matters More grant-making initiative. We are looking to you, our community, to assist us by deciding how to best distribute $100,000. Bangor Savings Bank is pleased to announce that the 2012 Community Matters More voting begins January 23rd and runs for six weeks, ending March 5th. Again this year, a total of 68 grants will be awarded to the organizations listed on the ballot and to the top 20 write-in recipients. The organizations in each of the eight regions (including write-ins) that get the most votes will receive $5,000 each. The remaining 60 organizations will each receive $1,000. To vote for your favorite nonprofits, visit Community Matters More or stop by any of our 56 branches statewide.  A complete list of voting guidelines and eligibility requirements for write-in nominations is available at www.bangor.com/cmm. We are proud that Community Matters More is now in its sixth year. The success of this annual initiative is made possible because of the commitment Mainers have to their communities and the important role nonprofits play in our state. As Maine’s largest independent bank, Bangor Savings Bank is committed to being a strong community partner and a good neighbor throughout Maine.

The public is invited to the Islamic Center of Maine’s 3rd annual open house: "Quran: Learn it or Burn it?" which will be held on Saturday, February 4th  from 5-7 p.m. at the Islamic Center of Maine in Orono (Location: 151 Park St. Orono, ME).  See the flyer in the Parish Hall.
