Contemplative Prayer - Thursdays at 5:30 pm in the Rectory Library

Contemplative Prayer at St. Saviour’s Parish: Each Thursday, from 5:30-6:30 pm, a group gathers in the Parish Library (in the Rectory Common at 41 Mt. Desert Street) to learn about and practice the art of centering prayer. We begin with listening to a 15-20 minute segment of Thomas Keating’s introduction to Centering Prayer. Keating uses scientific discoveries, psychological insights, spiritual wisdom from many traditions and Christian faith to appreciate the gift of contemplative prayer which has the capacity to open us to a rich interior life and to connect us with others and to all creation. Author of several books, including Intimacy with God and Open Mind, Open Heart, Keating is a Cistercian monk and founder of the Centering Prayer Movement. He resides at St. Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado. After listening, we share responses briefly, and then we sit together in silence for roughly thirty minutes. We welcome all points of view, and we each benefit from one another’s experiences.

Collect of the day

God of the dirtied hands, the wandering feet; you seek out the lost before ever they turn to you: take us with you into the abandoned places to find a new community outside our fortress walls; through Jesus Christ the Searching One.  Amen.                                                   Reprinted from Prayers For An Inclusive Church by Steven Shakespeare

The Emerging Church, Fridays at Noon. What is The Emerging Church? Sometimes called "Emergent" Church, this is a multi-faceted, ecumenical movement made up of Christians who question how far traditional church practices can respond to the needs of people in the 21st century and who are exploring new ways of following Christ today. If you are interested in learning more, please come to a Friday Noon conversation series beginning September 17 in the Parish Library in the Rectory Common. . During the first couple of meetings the group may also address some of the same material in Jonathan's Sunday offering "Rethinking the Sex Crisis with Sarah Coakley." Jenny Reece and Sarah Flynn will facilitate.

Rethinking the Sex Crisis with Sarah Coakley, Sundays at 8:45 am. “Anyone who has attentively followed the press coverage of the recent sex scandals in the Roman Catholic church in Boston, on the one hand, and of the divisions over homosexuality in the Anglican Communion, on the other, may have become aware of certain pressing contemporary 'cultural contradictions' on matters of sexuality and desire that these two crises enshrine, and to which I wish to draw explicit attention,” writes Sarah Coakley, the Norris-Hulse Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University and author of The New Asceticism, forthcoming in 2011 from Continuum Books.  Though Dr. Coakley will not be with us in person, we will discuss her fresh look at this controversy on September 19, 26 and October 5 in the Parish Library.

Island Connections continues to be in need of volunteer drivers. The demand for rides for medical appointments, errands, shopping for food, etc. has increased by 37% over the past year.  If you can help, even once a week, please call Island Connections at 288-4457. Gas cards are available if you are willing to make a trip off island.

College of the Atlantic’s Community Connections Program (CCP) pairs COAinternational students with local families to engage in communal activities on an informal basis. CCP is not a host-family program in the sense that students actually live with local families, but rather a friendship program that encourages the development of more global perspectives for both the students and families through cultural exchange. Students are given the opportunity to deepen their understanding of culture in the United States through participation in the everyday activities of a local volunteer family and local families are enriched by the opportunity to learn about the traditions, cultural practices and perspectives of the international student with whom they are connected. For more information about the Community Connections Program and application process, please go to our website: www.coa.edu/internationalstudentservices. If you would like to apply, or have questions or concerns, please contact the Coordinator of International Student Services, Kylee Allen, at 207-801-5673 or kallen@coa.edu.

The First Light Society of the Diocese of Maine

In 2003 the Episcopal Diocese of Maine established the First Light Society for any who had included St. Saviour’s Parish, the Diocese of Maine or any other Episcopal ministry in their will or planned giving. Several members of the St. Saviour’s are included as early participants. If you have made such plans, please let Jonathan know so that Bishop Lane can acknowledge your foresight. If you would prefer to keep your plan confidential, but want to support the effort, please let the rector know your wish. He will pass on word of an anonymous pledge while withholding your name.

Let all who seek you rejoice in you and be glad. Psalm 40:17
