Green Lake Watershed Improvement Project- Phase I

In the fall of 2011, the District completed the Green Lake Watershed Improvement Project (319 Grant) which started in the spring of 2009.  Outcomes of this grant included:

  • 20 road sites and 8 residential sites were fixed in the western half of the watershed to reduce erosion and help protect water quality. Some of the best management practices (BMPs) installed included vegetative buffers, new culverts, ditching, open-top culverts, and turnouts.

  • An estimated reduction of over 325 tons of sediment, over 276 pounds of phosphorus, and over 552 pounds of nitrogen from entering Green Lake per year. Plus an estimated 432 feet of shoreline was protected or restored around the lake.

  • Development of a long-range plan for education/outreach needs in the Green Lake Watershed which guided the implementation of 5 public outreach activities including a mailing to increase GLA membership, a Lake Day Event with a BBQ and MLCI boat cruise, conducting a survey of knowledge levels and putting together the Green Lake Outreach Plan, working towards increasing awareness of the LakeSmart program, and Buffer Boat Cruises for Ellsworth and Dedham/Lucerne City officials and Planning Board members.
